Liturgy for Pentecost Sudnay, Year C (Luke)
Passages of Scripture for Pentecost Sunday
Acts 2:1–21: The Holy Spirit arrives with power and unity, enabling the disciples to speak in many languages, a sign of God’s global mission and inclusive kingdom.
Genesis 11:1–9 (alt.): The Tower of Babel shows humanity’s prideful attempt to centralize power, which God disrupts—pointing to Pentecost as a divine reversal, bringing unity through diversity.

Romans 8:14–17: Through the Spirit, believers are adopted as children of God, sharing in Christ’s suffering and glory.
John 14:8–17, (25–27): Jesus promises the Holy Spirit as Advocate and guide, one who teaches, reminds, and brings peace—not as the world gives, but as God alone can.
Call to Worship
One: Come, Spirit of God, descend upon our hearts and gather us as one.
All: We come seeking the wind that stirred the Upper Room and set the world on fire.
One: Come, breath of God—breathe life into our bones and hope into our days.
All: We come as children of God, longing for wisdom, courage, and peace.
One: Come, flame of heaven—ignite our faith and kindle our witness.
All: We come to worship the Living God, who sends the Spirit to renew the face of the earth.
Opening Prayer
Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on us.
On this day of Pentecost, we remember how you filled a room and set hearts ablaze.
Do it again.
Melt what is cold, mend what is broken, and stir what is still.
Come, Holy Spirit—move among us now.
Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Holy God,
You send your Spirit to inspire, challenge, and guide—
But we confess that we often resist your movement.
We cling to comfort, fear difference, and silence your voice.
Forgive our hesitation and our pride.
Break through the barriers we build,
And renew us by the power of your Spirit.
Amen.
Assurance of Grace
Scripture: Romans 8:16–17
“The Spirit itself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”
Assurance:
Friends, hear the good news: You are not alone, not abandoned, and not forgotten.
By the grace of Jesus and the power of the Spirit, you are forgiven and set free.
Thanks be to God!
Prayer for Illumination
Holy Spirit,
Come now with fire and wind, with truth and grace.
Open our hearts as we open your Word.
Help us to listen well and live boldly,
That we might bear witness to Christ in all we say and do.
Amen.
