Liturgy for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (Matthew)
Introduction
This Sunday gathers small things with great weight. A kingdom grows from a mustard seed and is hidden like yeast in dough. A field is sold for the sake of a buried treasure. Solomon asks for wisdom rather than riches. And Paul declares that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. The readings hold together smallness and certainty, mustard seeds and unshakable love.
This liturgy follows the Revised Common Lectionary for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost (Year A) and is shaped by themes of God's faithfulness, wisdom, and love that will not let us go.
Did you know? By comparing God’s kingdom to mustard, Jesus challenges expectations. God’s reign does not resemble orderly gardens or carefully managed systems. It grows where it will, reshaping the landscape. Read more . . .
The lectionary readings at a glance
Genesis 29:15-28: Jacob labors seven years for Rachel and is deceived into marrying Leah first. He works another seven years for the one he loves. God's promise unfolds through a complicated and very human family.
Psalm 105:1-11, 45b: Give thanks to the Lord and remember the wonderful works he has done. He is mindful of his covenant forever, the promise made to Abraham's descendants.
1 Kings 3:5-12: An alternate track. God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers him anything he asks. Solomon requests wisdom to govern well. God grants it, pleased that he did not ask for riches or long life.
Psalm 119:129-136: An alternate track. Your decrees are wonderful. The unfolding of your words gives light and understanding to the simple.
Romans 8:26-39: The Spirit helps us in our weakness. All things work together for good for those who love God. Nothing in death or life, height or depth, can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52: Jesus tells a string of short parables. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, like yeast, like treasure hidden in a field, like a pearl worth selling everything to buy. Small beginnings carry great worth.

Opening prayer
God of mustard seeds and hidden treasure, you grow your kingdom in small and unexpected ways. As we gather, give us eyes to see what you are doing, even when it looks small. Teach us to value what matters most and to trust the love that will not let us go. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
Prayer of confession
Merciful God, we confess that we have looked for your kingdom in the wrong places, valuing what is large and visible over what you call precious. We have doubted that your love holds us in every circumstance. Forgive us. Open our eyes and anchor us in your steadfast love. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
Hear the good news that grounded the apostle Paul and which is proclaimed to us: "I am convinced that neither death, nor life... nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and held forever.
Thanks be to God!
