What Is the Prayer Before Bed?

For centuries, Christians have ended the day with a simple prayer before bed. It’s not about memorizing long words or performing a ritual—it’s about closing the day in God’s presence. When the night is quiet and worries start to rise, a bedtime prayer becomes a way of saying, Lord, the day is Yours, and so is my rest.

Whether you are praying with your family, teaching a child to pray, or whispering a personal prayer in the dark, ending the day with God anchors you in His care. A prayer before bed can be as short as a single verse or as simple as thanking Him for His love. What matters is the heart—a moment of trust before sleep.

Scripture for the Evening

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.” — Psalm 4:8, NRSV

Reflection

Psalm 4:8 is often called the “bedtime psalm.” It reminds us that sleep is an act of trust. We lie down not because all our problems are solved, but because God is faithful. Prayer before bed is a way of handing over control—letting go of tomorrow’s worries and today’s regrets—so that rest becomes possible.

Evening prayer doesn’t need to be complicated. A whispered “thank You,” a verse of Scripture, or a short prayer of trust can be enough to center your heart in God’s presence. The point is not the length of your words but the posture of your spirit. Night after night, this rhythm shapes us into people who rest in God’s love.
