Prayers for When You Are Sad: 12 Honest Prayers

Faith & Life / Prayers for the Day

Quick Summary

When you are sad, prayer can feel hard to start. You may not have the energy, the words, or the right mood. Scripture never asks for any of those. The Psalms were prayed by people who were tired, lonely, afraid, and weeping, and God kept their prayers.

Below are 12 prayers for when you are sad, each paired with a verse from Scripture. Some are a single breath long. Others are written for specific moments: feeling alone, feeling sad every day, not feeling like yourself, or lying awake at night. Pray the one that fits, change the words to make them yours, and come back as often as you need.

For what the Bible says about sadness itself, read Bible Verses About Sadness.

How to Pray When You Are Sad

You do not need to pray yourself into feeling better first. You can pray from exactly where you are.

1. Name what is true. Start with a single honest sentence: “God, I am sad.” “This hurts.” “I don’t know what to do.” Saying the truth to God is already prayer.

2. Speak without explaining. You do not need to justify your feelings before God will listen. Hannah could barely get words out at the temple, and God heard her anyway (1 Samuel 1:13). Read her story in Who Was Hannah in the Bible?

3. Let silence count. Some days you will have nothing to say. Paul promises that “the Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). Sitting before God without speaking is still prayer.

4. Borrow the Bible’s words. When your own words run out, pray a psalm. Psalms 13, 42, 61, and 88 were written for sad days. You don’t need to read the whole psalm. One verse is enough. See Bible Verses About Lament and the Overview of Psalms.

5. Try the shape of a lament. Many psalms follow three steps: an honest complaint, a request for help, and a word of trust. A simple lament might sound like this: God, I am overwhelmed and I don’t understand what is happening. Please help me. I am still choosing to trust you.

Jesus prayed this way himself. In Gethsemane he told his friends, “I am deeply grieved, even to death,” and then he prayed (Mark 14:34-36). See Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives (Luke 22:39-46).

Short Prayers for When You Are Sad

1. A Breath Prayer for Sadness (Psalm 42:11)

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? … Hope in God.”

Breathe in: Why are you cast down, O my soul? Breathe out: Hope in God.

Repeat it slowly as many times as you need. Breath prayers are useful when sadness leaves you too tired to form sentences.

2. A Simple Prayer When You Are Sad (Psalm 34:18)

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.”

God, I am sad. I don’t fully understand everything I feel, but I am bringing it to you as honestly as I can. You said you are near the brokenhearted. Be near me now. Hold what feels too heavy for me. Remind me that I am not invisible or forgotten. Show me the next small step, and give me the strength to take it. Amen.

Prayers for Specific Moments of Sadness

3. When You Feel Sad and Alone (Psalm 25:16)

“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.”

God, I feel sad, and I feel alone. The silence around me is heavy, and I wonder if anyone sees what I am carrying. I bring this loneliness to you without knowing how to fix it or how long it will last. Sit with me here. Stay with me when the hours feel long. Remind me that I am not forgotten, even when I feel cut off from everyone. If there are people who could walk with me, help me notice them, and give me courage to reach out in some small way. When I can’t find words, receive my sighs and my tears. Amen.

If loneliness is the heart of your sadness, see Bible Verses About Loneliness and the Morning Prayer for the Lonely.

4. When You Feel Sad Every Day (Psalm 13:2)

“How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long?”

God, I feel sad day after day, and I don’t always know why. Some moments are heavy, some are confusing, and some are more than I can manage. You let the psalmist ask “how long,” so I am asking too. Help me see what my heart is carrying. Remind me of Hannah, Elijah, and Jeremiah, who walked through long sorrow and still found you near. Give me strength for this one day. Lead me to the help I need, and keep hope alive in me until this season passes. Amen.

5. When God Feels Far Away (Psalm 139:7)

“Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?”

God, everything feels far away right now: my faith, my hope, the people I love, even myself. I can’t sense you, and I wonder whether you see me. Your word says there is nowhere I can go where you are not already there. Help me trust that you are nearer than my feelings tell me. Stay with me when nothing is clear. Teach me to wait without losing heart. Amen.

Hagar felt invisible in the wilderness, and God found her there. She called him El Roi, the God who sees (Genesis 16:13).

6. When You Don’t Know Why You Are Sad (Romans 8:26)

“We do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.”

God, I don’t understand this sadness. Nothing dramatic has happened, and still my heart feels heavy. I don’t know how to explain it, even to myself. Thank you that I don’t have to explain it to you. Let your Spirit pray for me where my words fall short. Hold the parts of me that are tired or overwhelmed. Help me pay attention to what I am feeling with patience instead of judgment, and help me take one gentle step forward today. Amen.

7. When You Don’t Feel Like Yourself (Psalm 139:13-14)

“For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

God, I don’t feel like myself, and it unsettles me. Something in me has changed, and I don’t know where it came from or what it means. You formed my inward parts, and you know me better than I know myself. Help me listen to what is happening within me. Remind me that Moses, Naomi, and Peter all went through seasons when they barely recognized their own lives, and you never let them go. Hold on to me while I find my footing again. Amen.

Pray this one at bedtime with the Psalm 139 Night Prayer.

8. When You Are Afraid of What You Are Feeling (Isaiah 41:10)

“Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

God, I am afraid of what I am feeling. My emotions feel stronger than my understanding, and I don’t know where to turn. Steady me. Help me breathe again. Give me the courage to speak honestly to someone I trust, and lead me to the people who can help. Walk with me through this hour. Remind me that I am not alone in my fear or my confusion. Amen.

If fear and worry are part of your sadness, see Biblical Anxiety and the Night Prayers for Anxiety and Fear.

9. When You Are Unhappy With Your Life (Psalm 90:14)

“Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”

God, I am unhappy with my life, and I don’t always know why. Some days are heavy with disappointment, and others with longings I can’t put into words. Help me look at my life honestly and with courage. Show me where change is needed, where healing needs to begin, and where you have already placed good things I have stopped seeing. Satisfy me with your steadfast love. Walk with me through each step, and remind me that you hold my past, my present, and the life I have yet to grow into. Amen.

10. For Courage to Ask for Help (Galatians 6:2)

“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

God, I am carrying more than I know how to hold, and I don’t know how to reach out. I worry about being a burden. I worry that no one will understand. Give me courage to take one step toward another person. Show me who can listen with kindness, and help me speak honestly when I do. If I need a doctor or a counselor, give me the strength to call. Let your care reach me through the people you send. Amen.

11. When You Are Sad at Night (Psalm 4:8)

“I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety.”

God, the house is still, and my sadness feels louder now than it did during the day. My thoughts keep circling. I give you this day, with everything that went right and everything that hurt. Keep watch over me while I sleep. Calm my mind and slow my heart. If I wake in the night, remind me that you are awake too. Give me rest, and meet me in the morning with new mercy. Amen.

A Prayer for Someone Who Is Sad

12. Praying for a Friend or Family Member (Romans 12:15)

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.”

God, I lift up [Name] to you. You see the sadness they are carrying, even the parts they haven’t told anyone. Be near them in a way they can feel. Give them rest, and give them people who will stay close. Show me how to love them well: when to speak, when to listen, and when to simply sit with them. Keep me from rushing their sorrow or offering easy answers. Hold them until joy returns. Amen.

When someone you love is sad, your presence often matters more than your words. Job’s friends did their best work in the first seven days, when they sat with him on the ground and said nothing at all (Job 2:13).

When Sadness Lingers

Prayer is a real comfort, and it works alongside other kinds of care. If you have felt sad most of the day, nearly every day, for more than two weeks, or if sadness is affecting your sleep, appetite, work, or relationships, please talk with your doctor or a licensed counselor. Asking for help can be an answer to prayer.
