Prayer for the Day: A Simple Prayer (Psalm 131:1–2)

Introduction

There are days when faith feels complicated. We try to make sense of every mystery, fix every problem, and prove we’re strong enough to manage it all. But Psalm 131 invites us to a quieter faith — one that doesn’t strive to know everything but simply rests in God. David writes, “O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me; but I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother.”

Scripture

(Psalm 131:1–2, NRSV)

When we pray simply, we lay down the need to impress God or others. We stop performing faith and start practicing trust. The beauty of a simple prayer is that it can rise from anywhere — the kitchen sink, the car line, the hospital hallway. It’s enough to whisper, “Lord, I’m here. Be near.” God doesn’t require eloquence. He asks only for honesty and presence.

Simplicity doesn’t mean smallness. A few words spoken in faith can carry the weight of eternity. Sometimes the holiest prayer is the one that sounds unfinished, the sigh we never put into words. God hears those too. Today, before you rush into everything else, take a moment to breathe a simple prayer. Let it be short enough to remember and deep enough to mean.

A Prayer for Adults

Lord, quiet my striving.

Teach me to rest in you.

When I am tempted to overthink, slow my mind.

When I am anxious, steady my heart.

Let my faith be simple — honest, trusting, and open.

{pause}

In the stillness of this moment, remind me that your presence is enough. Amen.

A Prayer for Children

Dear God,

Help me to pray even when I don’t have big words.

Thank you for loving me just as I am.

When I feel scared or busy, help me to stop and talk to you.

{pause}

Thank you for always listening. Amen.
