Bible Verses About Peace
Most of us want peace the way we want quiet: for the noise to stop, the argument to end, the diagnosis to go away. The Bible means something bigger. When Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you," he was hours from his arrest. Nothing around him was calm. And still he had peace to give away.
What Does the Bible Say About Peace?
In the Bible, peace is more than the absence of trouble. The Hebrew word shalom means wholeness: life put right with God, with others, and within ourselves. That peace is a gift, not an achievement. It comes through Jesus, who "is our peace" (Ephesians 2:14), and it can hold even when circumstances do not. As Jesus told his disciples, "In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!" (John 16:33).

Bible Verses About Peace When You're Anxious
"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6–7)
"Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace, in peace because they trust in you." (Isaiah 26:3)
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid." (John 14:27)
Paul wrote Philippians 4 from prison. The peace he describes does not come after the problem is solved; it "guards" us while the problem is still there, like a sentry at the door. Notice too that Isaiah literally says "shalom, shalom," peace doubled, the Hebrew way of saying complete peace.

Bible Verses About Peace When You Can't Sleep
"I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety." (Psalm 4:8)
"Be still, and know that I am God!" (Psalm 46:10)
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Psalm 4 is an evening prayer written by someone with real enemies. The peace to sleep comes not from everything being resolved but from knowing who keeps watch: "you alone, O LORD."

Bible Verses About Peace with God
"Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1)
"Through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross." (Colossians 1:20)
"Upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5)
This is the peace beneath all the others. Before peace is a feeling, it is a fact: the war between us and God is over, because Jesus ended it. In Isaiah 53, "made us whole" translates the same Hebrew word, shalom. If guilt keeps you up at night, start here. See Bible Verses About Forgiveness.
Bible Verses About Peace in the Storm
"He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace! Be still!' Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm." (Mark 4:39)
"I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!" (John 16:33)
"May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace!" (Psalm 29:11)
Jesus slept through the storm and then spoke peace into it. He did not promise a life without storms. He promised to be in the boat. See Jesus Calms the Storm: A Comparison Across the Gospels and In This World You Will Have Trouble (John 16:33).

Bible Verses About Peace with Others
"If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all." (Romans 12:18)
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." (Matthew 5:9)
"For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us." (Ephesians 2:14)
"Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it." (Psalm 34:14)
Notice the honesty of Romans 12:18: "if it is possible, so far as it depends on you." You are responsible for your part, not for the other person's response. And "pursue" is an active verb. Peacemaking takes work. See Bible Verses About Peacemaking and The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (Ephesians 6:15).
Bible Verses About Peace in a Broken World
"For a child has been born for us, a son given to us... and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)
"They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Isaiah 2:4)
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" (Luke 2:14)
The Bible looks forward to a day when weapons become farm tools. Until then, God's people are called to "seek the welfare of the city" where they live (Jeremiah 29:7); the word there is again shalom. See Prince of Peace: A Prophetic Title of Jesus and Yahweh Shalom: The Lord Is Peace.
| Word | Language | Meaning | Where you'll find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shalom | Hebrew | Wholeness, well-being, everything as it should be | Numbers 6:26; Isaiah 26:3; Jeremiah 29:7 |
| Eirēnē | Greek | Peace with God and others; harmony restored | John 14:27; Romans 5:1; Galatians 5:22 |
| Katallassō | Greek | To reconcile; to turn enemies into friends | Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:18–20 |
| Hēsychia | Greek | Quietness, calm, a settled life | 1 Timothy 2:2; 2 Thessalonians 3:12 |
When New Testament writers said eirēnē, they were thinking in Hebrew categories. That is why biblical peace is never only a private feeling. It is wholeness with God, with our neighbors, and within ourselves. Peace is also part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
What Biblical Peace Is Not
A guardrail
It is not avoiding conflict. Jeremiah condemned leaders who said "'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace" (Jeremiah 6:14). Covering over a wound is not healing it. Sometimes peacemaking means saying something hard.
It is not keeping quiet about harm. Biblical peace goes hand in hand with justice: "The effect of righteousness will be peace" (Isaiah 32:17). No one is called to "keep the peace" by staying in an abusive or unsafe situation.
It is not the absence of feelings. Jesus wept, grieved, and was troubled in spirit, and he still had peace to give. Feeling anxious does not mean you have failed at faith.
It is not something you have to manufacture. Peace is a gift. Jesus says "my peace I give to you." Our part is to receive it, often again and again.
Pastor's heads-up: I’ve met so many congregants at the funeral home or the hospital who have expressed to me their sense of peace. “Pastor, I just know that whatever happens, it’ll be okay.” They are not saying the outcome will be perfect or even “good.” They are saying, even if it doesn’t happen the way I want, I know I’ll be okay. As a minister, that stirs my faith and inspires me to trust in the Prince of Peace.
A Blessing of Peace
One of the oldest blessings in the Bible ends with peace. Its words were even found etched on two tiny silver scrolls near Jerusalem dating to around 600 BC, among the oldest surviving fragments of any biblical text. Priests in Israel spoke these words over the people, and many churches still close worship with them:
"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." (Numbers 6:24–26)
"Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways." (2 Thessalonians 3:16)

A Prayer for Peace
Lord Jesus, you said, "Peace I leave with you," on the hardest night of your life. I need that peace now. You know what is keeping me awake and what has my stomach in knots. I bring it to you with thanks for what you have already done. Guard my heart and my mind. Make me whole where I am broken, and make me a peacemaker where there is conflict. Let your peace rule in my heart today. Amen.
