Liturgy for Epiphany of the Lord

Introduction

Epiphany proclaims that the light of Christ is revealed not only to Israel, but to the nations. On this day, the church remembers the journey of the Magi—outsiders drawn by a star, seekers who recognize that God’s glory has entered the world in humility and vulnerability. Epiphany is about revelation and response: light breaking forth, wisdom bending low, and worship offered where we least expect it.

This liturgy is shaped by the Revised Common Lectionary readings for Epiphany of the Lord and is suitable for congregational worship, communion services, or the opening days of the Epiphany season.

Call to Worship

One: Arise, shine; for your light has come,
All: and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us.
One: Nations shall come to the light,
All: and kings to the brightness of God’s dawn.
One: From distant places, the seekers arrive,
All: bringing their gifts and their praise.
One: Come, let us worship the God whose light is for all people.
All: Let us rejoice in the revelation of Christ!

(Inspired by Isaiah 60 and Matthew 2)

Opening Prayer

Radiant God,

You revealed your glory in the light of a star and drew the nations to the Christ child. As we gather today, open our eyes to see your presence among us and beyond us. Lead us by your light, guide us by your wisdom, and receive the worship we offer with joy and humility. Through Jesus Christ, the light of the world, Amen.

Prayer of Confession

God of truth and mercy,

You call us to follow your light, yet we confess that we often prefer familiar paths. We resist the ways your revelation unsettles us. We cling to comfort, overlook the stranger, and hesitate to offer our whole selves in worship. Forgive us, O God. Turn us again toward your light, that our lives may reflect the grace we have received in Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news: “In Christ Jesus you have been brought near.” (Ephesians 3:6)

In Jesus Christ, the light revealed to the nations, we are forgiven, restored, and called into God’s saving purpose.

Thanks be to God!

Prayer for Illumination

Holy God,

As the Magi were guided by a star, guide us now by your Spirit. Open the Scriptures to us, that we may see your truth, recognize your grace, and follow your Son with faith and courage. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Scripture Readings

  • Isaiah 60:1–6

  • Psalm 72:1–7, 10–14

  • Ephesians 3:1–12

  • Matthew 2:1–12

Prayers of the People

God of all nations,

We give thanks that your salvation is for the whole world. We pray for your church, that it may reflect the wideness of your mercy and bear witness to your light in every place. We pray for leaders and nations, that justice may flourish and peace may be pursued. We pray for all who seek you—those near and far, known and unknown—that they may be guided by your truth and welcomed by your grace. Gather us with all your people into the joy of Christ’s kingdom, now and always. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Eternal God,

You have revealed your glory in Jesus Christ and invited us to follow where his light leads. As we go from this place, send us out as bearers of that light, ready to offer our gifts, our lives, and our love for the sake of the world. Through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
