Liturgy for Baptism of Our Lord
Introduction
The Baptism of the Lord marks a turning point in the gospel story. Jesus steps into the waters of repentance, not because he needs cleansing, but to stand in solidarity with a broken world. As he rises from the Jordan, the heavens open, the Spirit descends, and a voice declares belovedness. This feast invites the church to remember its own baptism—its calling, identity, and mission in Christ.
This liturgy follows the Revised Common Lectionary readings for the Baptism of the Lord and is suitable for worship services that include baptismal remembrance, reaffirmation of faith, or the celebration of God’s beloved Son.
The Lectionary Readings at a Glance
The readings for Epiphany of the Lord proclaim that the light of Christ is revealed to the nations and that God’s salvation reaches far beyond expected boundaries.
In Isaiah 60:1–6, God calls Jerusalem to rise and shine, for divine light has come and draws the nations toward it. Wealth, power, and glory are reimagined not as domination, but as gifts flowing toward God’s reign of justice and peace.
Psalm 72:1–7, 10–14 envisions a ruler whose authority is marked by righteousness, compassion for the poor, and care for the vulnerable. The psalm echoes Epiphany’s theme that true kingship serves life rather than exploits it.
In Ephesians 3:1–12, Paul declares the mystery now revealed: Gentiles are fellow heirs in Christ. God’s saving purpose, once hidden, is now made known through Jesus and entrusted to the church for the sake of the world.
Matthew 2:1–12 tells the story of the Magi, outsiders who follow a star and recognize the Christ where others do not. Their journey reveals that God’s light is not confined to one people or place, and that worship often comes from unexpected directions.
Together, these readings proclaim Epiphany as a season of revelation, invitation, and widening grace—where Christ is made known as light for all.
Call to Worship
One: The voice of the Lord is over the waters.
All: The God of glory thunders; the Lord is over mighty waters.
One: Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights.
All: God has put the Spirit upon him to bring justice to the nations.
One: Come, let us worship the One who calls us beloved.
All: Let us give glory to God and praise the Lord!
(Inspired by Psalm 29 and Isaiah 42)
Opening Prayer
Faithful God,
At the waters of the Jordan, you revealed Jesus as your beloved Son and poured out your Spirit upon him. As we gather in worship, remind us that we, too, are claimed by your grace. Wash us in your mercy, ground us in our calling, and send us forth to live as your people in the world. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
Prayer of Confession
God of mercy and truth,
You name us as your own, yet we confess that we forget who we are. We turn from our baptismal calling and live as though fear and failure define us. We resist the work of justice, neglect the way of peace, and hesitate to trust your Spirit’s leading. Forgive us, O God. Renew us in the waters of grace, that we may live as your beloved children. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Hear the good news: “God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” (Acts 10:34–35)
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, claimed, and sent in peace.
Thanks be to God!
Prayer for Illumination
Holy God,
By your Spirit you opened the heavens and revealed your Son. Open our hearts now as we turn to Scripture. Let your Word wash over us, remind us of our identity in Christ, and lead us into faithful obedience. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Prayers of the People
God of all creation,
You have called Jesus your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. We pray for your church, that it may reflect Christ’s humility and faithfulness in the world. We pray for all who are baptized, especially those who feel forgotten or unworthy, that they may know they are claimed and loved. We pray for justice among the nations, for peace where there is conflict, and for healing where there is pain. Send us out renewed by your Spirit, ready to serve in Christ’s name. Amen.
Closing Prayer
Eternal God,
As the heavens once opened over the Jordan, open our lives to your purposes. Keep us grounded in the waters of baptism and faithful to the call you place upon us. May we go forth as your beloved people, bearing witness to your grace and truth in the world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
