Faith & Life / Nightly Prayers
Quick Summary
Bedtime is one of the best moments of the day to pray as a family. The house slows down, the screens go off, and the people you love are under one roof. Moses told Israel to talk about God's words "when you lie down and when you rise" (Deuteronomy 6:7). The psalmist reminds us who guards the house through the night: "Unless the LORD guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain" (Psalm 127:1).
When our children were young, we’d teach them to pray. We’d finish reading the children’s book and “tell God thank you for what made us happy.” Something as simple as that can be formative. It normalizes talking about our faith together. And, of course, if there was a concern surfaced, we “ask God to help, and thank God for helping us.”
This page gives you night prayers for your family, each rooted in Scripture. You'll find a night prayer for your whole family, a simple evening family devotion, a couples prayer before bed, bedtime prayers for children and teenagers, night prayers for parents, expectant parents, and grandparents, prayers for family unity and healing, a prayer for a family going through hard times, and a blessing to speak over your family before sleep.
A Night Prayer for My Family
Psalm 127:1
"Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain."
In ancient cities, guards stood watch on the walls all night. The psalmist says the real guard is God. Parents can lock the doors and check on the kids, but only God can keep a home safe and whole. A night prayer for your family hands the night watch to him. For more, see Bible Verses About Family.
A Night Prayer for My Family
LORD, you build our house and you guard it through the night. Thank you for each person under this roof. [Name them.] Watch over us while we sleep. Protect our bodies, our minds, and our hearts. Forgive us for the impatient words of today, and help us forgive each other. Let our home be a place of love, safety, and peace. Wake us tomorrow ready to love one another well. Amen.
A Simple Evening Family Devotion
Deuteronomy 6:6-7
"Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise."
Faith at home doesn't require a long service. Moses pictured it woven into ordinary moments, including bedtime. Joshua made the same commitment for his household: "as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD" (Joshua 24:15). Here is a family devotion you can do in ten minutes before bed.
Gather. Sit together in the living room or on the edge of a child's bed.
Read one short passage. A psalm, a Gospel story, or one verse from this page.
Ask one question. "Where did you see God today?" or "What was the best part of your day, and the hardest?"
Pray for each other by name. Let everyone who wants to pray say one sentence.
Bless each other. End with the blessing at the bottom of this page.

A Couples Prayer Before Bed
Ephesians 4:26 and Mark 10:9
"Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger." (Ephesians 4:26)
"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." (Mark 10:9)
Praying together at night is one of the simplest ways a couple can grow closer. Paul's advice is practical: settle things before you sleep. Holding hands and praying for each other for one minute is hard to do while you're still angry. For more, see Bible Verses About Marriage and Biblical Marriage.
A Couples Prayer Before Bed
Lord, thank you for each other and for this day together. Forgive us for the ways we hurt each other today. Help us let go of anger before we sleep. Bind us together in love. Protect our marriage from everything that would pull us apart. Bless our rest tonight, and let us wake tomorrow still choosing each other. What you have joined together, keep together. Amen.
A Short Prayer for My Spouse
God, bless [name] tonight. Give them deep rest and peace about tomorrow. Help me love them well. Amen.
A Bedtime Prayer for Children
Matthew 19:14
"Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs."
When parents brought their children to Jesus, the disciples tried to send them away. Jesus welcomed them. Bedtime prayer is one of the first ways children learn to come to Jesus themselves. Isaiah promised, "All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the prosperity of your children" (Isaiah 54:13). See Bible Verses About Children.
A Bedtime Prayer to Pray Over Your Children
Lord Jesus, I bring my children to you tonight. [Name them.] Thank you for each one. Hold them while they sleep. Guard their dreams. Teach them your ways and help them know how much you love them. Make them kind, brave, and wise. Watch over them all their lives. Amen.
Bedtime Prayers Young Kids Can Pray
Dear God, thank you for my family and my bed. Please keep us safe tonight. Amen.
Jesus, thank you for loving me. Help me sleep well and wake up happy. Amen.
God, thank you for today. I'm sorry for the times I wasn't kind. Help me do better tomorrow. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Teenagers
1 Timothy 4:12
"Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity."
Paul wrote this to Timothy, a young church leader. Teenagers face real pressure: school, friendships, social media, and questions about faith and identity. They often stay up late, and the night can be when worries feel heaviest. Some teens won't pray out loud with a parent anymore, and that's okay. Pray for them anyway.
A Night Prayer for My Teenager
Lord, I lift up [name] tonight. You know what they're carrying that they haven't told me. Protect them from harm, from harmful voices, and from the lies they might believe about themselves. Give them good friends and good choices. Draw them close to you. Help me know when to speak and when to listen. Amen.
A Night Prayer a Teen Can Pray
God, today was a lot. Thank you for being with me in it. Help me with what I'm worried about. [Name it.] Help me be who you made me to be. Give me rest tonight. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Parents
Proverbs 22:6
"Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray."
Parenting is long, faithful work, and most of it happens in small moments no one sees. Proverbs gives a word of hope to tired parents: the seeds you plant today matter. At night, after the last child is asleep, parents need prayer too. For morning prayers for parents, see Morning Prayers for Family. For parents of grown children, see Bible Verses About Parenting Adult Children.
A Night Prayer for a Tired Parent
Father, I'm worn out tonight. You know how today went. Forgive me where I lost my patience. Thank you for the moments of joy. Give me wisdom for tomorrow, patience for the hard moments, and enough energy to keep going. Let my children see your love in me. Give me rest tonight. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Expectant Parents
Psalm 139:13-14
"For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
Waiting for a baby brings joy, hope, and plenty of nervous nights. Psalm 139 says God is already at work, knitting this child together. The baby is known and loved before anyone sees their face.
A Night Prayer for Our Baby
Creator God, you are knitting this little one together right now. Thank you for this life. Protect the baby and protect [mother's name] tonight. Give us peace about the birth and wisdom for the days ahead. Prepare our hearts and our home. Let this child grow up knowing they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Grandparents
2 Timothy 1:5
"I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you."
Timothy's faith started with his grandmother. Grandparents often carry the faith of a family across generations. The psalmist prayed, "So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to all the generations to come" (Psalm 71:18). For prayers for older loved ones, see Morning Prayers for Others.
A Night Prayer for Grandparents
Lord, thank you for grandparents. [Name them.] Thank you for their love and their faith, passed down to us. Give them good health, rest tonight, and joy in their family. Let their faith live on in their children and grandchildren. Amen.
A Grandparent's Night Prayer for Grandchildren
Father, I bring my grandchildren to you tonight. [Name them.] Keep them safe wherever they are sleeping. Let the faith you planted in our family grow in them. Let me live long enough to see it bear fruit. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Family Unity and Healing
Psalm 133:1 and Colossians 3:13-14
"How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!" (Psalm 133:1)
"Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony." (Colossians 3:13-14)
Every family has conflict. Some families carry wounds that go back years: estranged siblings, adult children who don't call, hurt that has never been talked about. Paul's word is to forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Forgiveness is often a long process, and it can start with a prayer before sleep. See Bible Verses About Family Unity and Bible Verses About Forgiveness.
A Night Prayer for Family Unity
God of peace, how good it is when families live together in unity. Bring that unity to our family. Where there is tension, bring patience. Where there is hurt, bring healing. Where there is silence, bring honest words spoken in love. Bind us together with love. Amen.
A Night Prayer for a Broken Relationship
Lord, you know the relationship in my family that is broken. [Name the person.] I can't fix it tonight. Soften my heart and theirs. Help me forgive as you have forgiven me. Show me the next right step toward peace, and give me courage to take it when the time is right. Amen.
A Night Prayer for a Family Facing Hard Times
Psalm 34:18
"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit."
Job loss, illness, money trouble, grief, and divorce all land on a whole family at once. Nights can be the hardest part. God is near to families who are hurting, closer than they know. For more, see Morning Prayers for Hard Times and Prayers for When You Are Sad.
A Night Prayer for a Hurting Family
LORD, our family is going through a hard time. [Name it.] You are near to the brokenhearted, and our hearts are broken tonight. Hold us together. Give us strength for tomorrow, patience with each other, and hope that this won't last forever. Provide what we need. Let us rest tonight, trusting you with what we can't fix. Amen.
A Bedtime Blessing Over Your Family
Numbers 6:24-26
Many parents speak this blessing over their children at bedtime, with a hand on their head. God gave it to Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel.
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
