Faith & Life / Nightly Prayers
Quick Summary
Hard times feel even harder at night. The house is dark, the distractions are gone, and the worry, grief, or loneliness you carried all day finally has your full attention. The psalmists knew those nights. "Every night I flood my bed with tears," one wrote (Psalm 6:6). Another found comfort in the same dark hours: "By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life" (Psalm 42:8).
I wrote this from experience and from talking with congregants who are having just that, a hard time. Those times are for wisdom, consolation, and hope. I hope these prayers resonate with you, and I pray that the Spirit of the Lord, our Good Shepherd, leads you through the valley, and you see better days very soon.
This page gives you night prayers for hard times, each rooted in a verse of Scripture. You'll find prayers for fear, grief, loneliness, money worries and job loss, work stress, hard decisions, needing strength, seasons of change, guilt, and despair, plus a short prayer for children on hard nights.

Why Hard Times Feel Worse at Night
Darkness magnifies trouble. Problems that seemed manageable at noon can feel enormous at two in the morning. Our bodies are tired, our defenses are down, and there is nothing to do but think.
Scripture doesn't pretend otherwise. Many of the most honest prayers in the Bible were prayed at night. David wept on his bed. Jesus prayed in anguish in Gethsemane while his friends slept. Paul and Silas, beaten and chained in prison, "were praying and singing hymns to God" at midnight (Acts 16:25). The night can be a place of struggle, and it can also be a place of prayer. "Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day" (Psalm 139:12). For morning prayers in a hard season, see Morning Prayers for Hard Times.
A Night Prayer When You Are Afraid
Psalm 56:3
"O Most High, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you."
David wrote Psalm 56 when he had been captured by enemies in Gath (Psalm 56, title). His prayer doesn't deny the fear. It says what to do with it: when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Fear and trust can live in the same night. For more, see Fear Not Verses in the Bible and Bible Verses About Fear.
A Night Prayer for Fear and Anxiety
Most High God, I'm afraid tonight. [Name what you fear.] My mind keeps running to the worst. When I am afraid, I will trust in you. I put this fear in your hands. Guard my heart and my mind. Stay with me in the dark, and let me rest knowing you are awake and in control. Amen.

A Night Prayer for Grief and Loss
Matthew 5:4 and Psalm 6:6
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)
"I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping." (Psalm 6:6)
Grief often waits until bedtime. The empty side of the bed, the phone that doesn't ring, the house that is too still. The Bible gives permission to weep at night, and Jesus promises comfort to those who mourn. He wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus (John 11:35). Read Bible Verses About Grief and Grief in the Bible: What God Says About Mourning and Comfort.
A Night Prayer for Grief
Lord Jesus, you wept for your friend, and you see my tears tonight. I miss [name] so much. The nights are the hardest. Hold me in my grief. Thank you for the love we shared. Comfort me as you promised. Give me sleep tonight, and give me strength for tomorrow. Amen.
A Night Prayer When You Feel Alone
Psalm 102:7 and Psalm 23:4
"I lie awake; I am like a lonely bird on the housetop." (Psalm 102:7)
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)
Loneliness is sharpest at night. The psalmist pictured himself as a single bird on a rooftop, awake while everyone else slept. Psalm 23 answers that picture with a promise: you are with me. Even in the darkest valley, the Shepherd is there. See Bible Verses About Loneliness and Yahweh Rohi, the LORD My Shepherd.
A Night Prayer for the Lonely
Good Shepherd, I feel alone tonight. No one is here to talk to, and the late hours feel long. You promised that you are with me, even in the darkest valley. Be near to me now. Comfort me with your presence. Lead me tomorrow to people who will care for me, and let me care for someone else too. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Money Worries and Job Loss
Philippians 4:19 and Matthew 6:34
"And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
"So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today." (Matthew 6:34)
Bills, debt, and job loss keep many people awake. Lying in bed running the numbers again won't change them tonight. Jesus' advice fits the night perfectly: today's trouble is enough for today. Tomorrow's worries can wait until tomorrow. For more, see Bible Verses About Finances and Yahweh Jireh, the LORD Will Provide.
A Night Prayer for Financial Stress
God who provides, you know what I owe and what I need. [Name it.] I can't fix it tonight, so I give it to you. Provide for my family. Give me wisdom tomorrow about what to do. Keep me from fear and from foolish choices. Let me sleep tonight, trusting that you will meet every real need. Amen.
A Night Prayer After Losing a Job
Lord, I lost my job, and I don't know what comes next. I feel ashamed and afraid. Remind me that my worth was never in my work. Open the right door at the right time. Provide for us while we wait. Give me courage for the search tomorrow, and rest for tonight. Amen.

A Night Prayer for Work Stress
Exodus 33:14
"My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
God spoke these words to Moses, who was carrying the weight of leading a whole nation through the wilderness. Work stress follows many of us home: emails at bedtime, a conflict that replays in our heads, a deadline that won't let us sleep. God's promise to Moses is for the overworked too.
A Night Prayer After a Stressful Workday
Lord, today was stressful, and I brought it home with me. [Name what's weighing on you.] I set it down now. Your presence went with me today, and it stays with me tonight. Give me rest. Help me leave tomorrow's work for tomorrow. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Guidance in a Hard Decision
Psalm 16:7
"I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me."
Big decisions often keep us up at night. The psalmist found that God could guide him even in the night hours. Proverbs promises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6). See Bible Verses About Guidance and Biblical Wisdom.
A Night Prayer for Guidance
LORD, I have a decision to make, and I don't know which way to go. [Name it.] Give me counsel. Instruct my heart, even in the night. Close the doors that should close and open the ones you want me to walk through. Help me trust you more than my own understanding. Let me sleep tonight and wake with clarity. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Strength
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed."
Paul knew what it was to be at the end of his strength. He was beaten, shipwrecked, and imprisoned. Yet he could write this list: afflicted, perplexed, struck down, and still standing. The strength came from God, "so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). See Bible Verses About Strength in Hard Times.
A Night Prayer for Strength
God, I'm worn down tonight. I feel crushed, but you say I am not crushed. I feel abandoned, but you say I am not forsaken. Hold me up. Give me your strength for tomorrow, because I have none of my own left. Let me rest tonight in your power. Amen.
A Night Prayer in a Season of Change
Hebrews 13:8
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
A move, a diagnosis, a divorce, an empty nest, retirement, a new job: transitions leave us unsteady. Everything familiar is shifting. Hebrews gives one fixed point: Jesus doesn't change. For more, see Bible Verses About Change.
A Night Prayer for Times of Transition
Unchanging Lord, so much in my life is changing, and I feel unsteady. [Name the change.] You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Be my steady ground tonight. Help me let go of what is ending and trust you with what is beginning. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Guilt and Forgiveness
Psalm 32:5
"Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,' and you forgave the guilt of my sin."
Guilt keeps people awake. Just before this verse, David describes what hiding his sin did to him: "day and night your hand was heavy upon me" (Psalm 32:4). Relief came when he confessed. "If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). See Biblical Forgiveness.
A Night Prayer for Forgiveness and Peace
Lord, I can't sleep because of what I did. [Confess it.] I won't hide it from you anymore. Forgive me. Cleanse me. Show me if I need to make something right tomorrow, and give me courage to do it. Thank you that your forgiveness is real. Let me rest in your mercy tonight. Amen.
A Night Prayer When You Feel Hopeless
Psalm 42:8
"By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life."
Psalm 42 is a prayer from the bottom. "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?" (Psalm 42:5). The psalmist doesn't pretend to feel better than he does. He keeps talking to God. When the prophet Elijah reached the end of himself and lay down under a tree, God sent an angel with food and let him sleep, twice, before asking anything of him (1 Kings 19:4-8). Sometimes rest is the first thing God gives. See Bible Verses About Despair and Biblical Depression.
A Night Prayer When I Have No Hope Left
God of my life, I'm at the bottom tonight. I don't have words for how heavy this is. I'm still talking to you, because I don't know where else to go. Let your song be with me in the night. Send me help, like you sent help to Elijah. Give me rest. Hold on to me when I can't hold on to you. Amen.
When a hard time becomes too much. Prayer is a real comfort, and it works alongside other kinds of care. If you are struggling to get through the day, please talk with your doctor, a counselor, or your pastor. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States) right now, or go to your nearest emergency room. A Prayer for Children on Hard Nights
Children feel hard times too: a move, a divorce, a sick grandparent, a scary day at school.
Dear God, I feel sad (or scared) tonight. Please be close to me. Help me feel safe. Thank you for loving me even when things are hard. Amen.
Jesus, please help our family. Take care of us tonight. Amen.
