Faith & Life / Nightly Prayers
Quick Summary
While you get ready for bed, a nurse is starting a twelve-hour shift. A soldier is on watch. A trucker is driving through the dark. A caregiver is awake beside someone who can't sleep. Night prayer is a chance to remember them and even ourselves. "Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD!" (Psalm 134:1).
This page gives you night prayers for others, each rooted in Scripture. You'll find a classic prayer for everyone who works, watches, or weeps tonight, plus prayers for night-shift and healthcare workers, military and first responders, caregivers, the elderly, students and teachers, travelers on the road, and peace in the world. There's also a simple way to pray for others before you sleep.

A Prayer for Those Who Work, Watch, or Weep Tonight
One of the most loved night prayers in the Christian tradition comes from the service of Compline in the Book of Common Prayer. It is often credited to Augustine. In a few lines, it gathers up everyone who is awake and hurting in the night.
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
This prayer is a good one to memorize. It takes less than a minute, and it turns your bedtime into a moment of love for the whole world. Interceding for others is one of the oldest Christian practices. Paul urged "that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone" (1 Timothy 2:1). A Night Prayer for Night-Shift and Healthcare Workers
Psalm 134:1 and Matthew 25:36
"Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD!" (Psalm 134:1)
"I was sick and you took care of me." (Matthew 25:36)
Psalm 134 is the last of the Songs of Ascents. It honors the priests and Levites who kept watch in the temple through the night. Today, night watch is kept by nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, aides, security guards, factory workers, and many others. Jesus said that caring for the sick is caring for him.
A Night Prayer for Healthcare Workers
Lord Jesus, you healed the sick and you see every nurse, doctor, aide, and technician working tonight. Give them strength for the long hours, clear minds for hard decisions, and gentle hands for frightened patients. Protect them from exhaustion and from illness. Comfort them when they lose a patient. Let them know their work is holy, because when they care for the sick, they care for you. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Everyone on the Night Shift
God who never sleeps, bless everyone working tonight while the rest of us rest. Keep them safe, alert, and well. Give them rest when their shift is done. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Military and First Responders
Nehemiah 4:9
"So we prayed to our God, and set a guard as a protection against them day and night."
When Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, the people faced real threats. They did two things: they prayed, and they posted guards. Both mattered. Tonight, soldiers, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics stand guard for the rest of us. Psalm 91 promises, "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways" (Psalm 91:11). For more, see the Psalm 91 Prayer.
A Night Prayer for Those Who Serve
Faithful God, I pray tonight for soldiers far from home, and for police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers on duty right now. [Name anyone you know.] Command your angels to guard them. Give them courage in danger and wisdom in every split-second decision. Comfort their families who are waiting up. Bring every one of them home safe. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Caregivers
Isaiah 40:29 and Galatians 6:2
"He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless." (Isaiah 40:29)
"Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)
Caregivers often get the least sleep of anyone: parents of newborns, adult children caring for aging parents, spouses caring for someone with dementia or cancer. Much of their love happens in the middle of the night, and much of it goes unseen. Isaiah promises strength to people who have run out of their own.
A Night Prayer for Caregivers
Lord, I lift up every caregiver tonight. [Name them, or yourself.] They are tired in ways most people never see. Give them power when they feel faint. Give them patience at 3 a.m. Let them sleep when they can, and send others to share the load. Let them know that every act of care is seen by you. Amen.
A Night Prayer for the Elderly
Psalm 71:9
"Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength is spent."
Nights can be long and lonely for older people, especially those living alone, in nursing homes, or in hospitals. The psalmist's prayer is honest about the fear of being forgotten in old age. God's answer comes through Isaiah: "even when you turn gray I will carry you" (Isaiah 46:4). For more, see Bible Verses About Aging.
A Night Prayer for the Elderly
God of all our years, I pray tonight for older people who feel alone. [Name them.] Sit with them in the long hours. Ease their pain. Calm their fears. Remind them that they are not forgotten, by you or by the people who love them. Carry them through this night. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Students and Teachers
Proverbs 9:10
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight."
The night before a big test is often a night of cramming and worry. Teachers stay up grading papers and planning lessons. Proverbs reminds both that true wisdom begins with God. James adds a promise: "If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you" (James 1:5). For more, see Bible Verses About Wisdom.
A Night Prayer Before an Exam
Lord, [name] has a test tomorrow. Help them stop studying at a reasonable hour and get real rest. Calm their nerves. Help them remember what they learned. Give them wisdom tomorrow and peace about the result. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Teachers
God of wisdom, bless every teacher who is still working tonight. Give them rest, renewed energy, and joy in their students tomorrow. Amen.
A Night Prayer for Travelers
Exodus 13:21
"The LORD went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night."
God led Israel through the wilderness day and night. At night, he gave them fire to see by. Tonight, many people are traveling: truckers on the interstate, families driving home, people on red-eye flights, refugees on the move. God goes before them still.
A Night Prayer for Travelers
LORD, you led your people by fire in the night. Go before everyone traveling tonight. [Name them.] Keep drivers alert and roads safe. Guard every plane in the sky. Watch over those who have no safe place to stay. Bring each traveler safely to where they are going. Amen.

A Night Prayer for Peace in the World
Isaiah 2:4
"He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
Somewhere in the world tonight, families are lying awake listening for bombs. Isaiah saw a day when weapons would become farm tools and war would be forgotten. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). Praying for peace is one way to take part in that work. See Bible Verses About Peacemaking, Prince of Peace, and Ruler of All Nations.
A Night Prayer for Peace in the World
Prince of Peace, I pray tonight for every place at war. [Name them.] Protect children and families in the line of fire. Give wisdom to leaders. Strengthen peacemakers. Comfort the grieving and shelter the refugees. Hasten the day when nations will not learn war anymore. Make me a peacemaker in my own home and community. Amen.
