Morning Prayer for Lent – Joel 2:12–13

Introduction

The mornings of Lent invite us to slow down and listen. The season is not about rushing toward Easter but learning to walk faithfully with Christ in the wilderness. Through the prophet Joel, God says, “Return to me with all your heart.” Lent begins there—in the returning. Morning prayer becomes a way to open our hearts again, to remember that God’s mercy meets us even in the dust.

This prayer is for all who seek renewal and honesty in their faith. Whether you are beginning the Lenten journey or continuing it, know that God welcomes you as you are, with love that never tires.

Scripture

“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.”
— Joel 2:12–13 (NRSV)

Reflection

Lent is a season of the heart. The world measures strength by speed and success, but God looks for sincerity. Joel reminds us that true repentance is not about what we do outwardly—it’s about what we offer inwardly. God wants our honesty more than our performance.

Each Lenten morning offers another chance to return. Prayer becomes our compass, pointing us toward humility, gratitude, and faith. We remember that grace is not something to earn but something to receive. God’s love calls us back, again and again, until our hearts rest in Him.

If you begin this day feeling weary, uncertain, or unworthy, let that be the place God meets you. The return begins now.
