Prayer for the Day: A Simple Prayer – Matthew 6:9–13

Introduction

Some prayers carry us through a lifetime, and none more than the one Jesus taught his disciples. The Lord’s Prayer is simple enough for a child to learn and deep enough to shape a life of faith. Praying it in the middle of the day resets our focus—not on what we need to accomplish, but on what God is already doing.

This prayer for the day draws from that same spirit of simplicity. It’s a way to pause, breathe, and remember that God is both near and attentive to every need.

Scripture

“Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”
— Matthew 6:9–13 (NRSV)

Reflection

At its heart, the Lord’s Prayer is not about getting what we want but aligning ourselves with what God wants. It brings heaven and earth together in one breath. When we pray for daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance, we’re reminded that life is sustained by grace.

A simple prayer is not a lesser prayer—it’s an honest one. It centers us in dependence and draws us back to what matters most: God’s kingdom, God’s will, God’s care.

At midday, when distractions multiply, let this prayer be your anchor. Speak it slowly, and let its rhythm draw your heart into stillness.
