Prayer for the Day: Financial Stress – Matthew 6:31–33

Introduction

Money worries can quietly fill the mind, pushing peace aside. Jesus speaks directly to that anxiety: “Do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ ... But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Prayer for financial stress is not only about asking for provision—it’s about finding rest in the Provider.

This prayer is for those who feel uncertain about bills, income, or future plans. God’s care is steady even when numbers don’t seem to add up.

Scripture

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
— Matthew 6:31–33 (NRSV)

Reflection

Financial stress has a way of shrinking our vision, making it hard to see beyond the next deadline or expense. Jesus invites us to lift our eyes—to remember that our worth is not tied to our wealth. The God who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows knows what we need and cares for us deeply.

Afternoon prayer in seasons of financial uncertainty becomes an act of surrender. It’s where we trade fear for faith, trusting that God’s abundance often shows up in ways we couldn’t have predicted. The promise is not luxury, but enough—and often, enough turns out to be more than we imagined.

If your heart feels heavy today, let this prayer remind you: you are seen, you are loved, and you will not be forgotten.
