Prayer for the Day: A Simple Prayer (Matthew 6:7–8)

Introduction

Jesus said, “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

(Matthew 6:7–8, NRSV)

Sometimes we forget that prayer isn’t about performance. We worry about saying the right things, or filling the silence, or sounding like someone who knows what they’re doing. But Jesus reminds us that God already knows our needs before we speak them. Prayer is not about getting God’s attention — it’s about remembering that we already have it.

A simple prayer is one that clears away the clutter. No pretense, no long speeches, just a quiet reaching toward the One who loves us. When we drop our rehearsed words and speak from the heart, prayer becomes honest again. The smallest prayer, whispered with sincerity, can echo louder in heaven than any elaborate speech ever could.

So today, let your prayer be simple. Let it sound like breathing, or like gratitude, or like the whisper of a child who just wants to be near their parent. That’s the kind of prayer that moves mountains — not because of its length, but because of the love behind it.

A Prayer for Adults

Lord, you already know what I need.

You see what I hide, you hear what I can’t say.

Today I offer you my heart, without pretense or polish.

Let my prayer be simple and real.

{pause}

Help me rest in your knowing and trust your goodness. Amen.

A Prayer for Children

Dear God,

You already know what I’m thinking.

Help me talk to you like a friend.

Thank you for listening, even when I don’t know what to say.

{pause}

I love you, and I’m glad you love me too. Amen.
