Reasoning
Joseph’s story unfolds in tension. He discovers that Mary, his betrothed, is pregnant. By all appearances, her story makes no sense. The law would have supported his decision to dismiss her. The world would have understood.
But God interrupts Joseph’s plan. In a dream, the angel says, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20, NRSV)
Joseph wakes up and does what the angel commanded. No speech. No delay. Just obedience.
He doesn’t get the spotlight, but he gets something better: the peace that comes from doing what’s right, even when no one sees.
The Sermon
1. Joseph Shows Us Integrity in the Midst of Confusion
Before the angel’s message, Joseph was already described as a righteous man. That word means more than moral correctness; it means compassion joined with justice. He plans to end the engagement quietly, to spare Mary from shame.
Integrity isn’t about being perfect. It’s about choosing kindness even when you’re hurt. Joseph’s first instinct is mercy. That’s the kind of righteousness that looks like God.
2. Joseph Teaches Us to Listen
In a noisy world, Joseph’s quietness is instructive. He listens in his dreams. He hears what most would dismiss.
When life confuses us, our first move is often to act, to fix, to speak. Joseph reminds us that listening can be an act of faith.
Sometimes God speaks softly enough that only silence can catch it.
3. Joseph Models Obedience Without Applause
After the dream, Joseph does exactly as he’s told. He takes Mary as his wife. Later, he will name the child Jesus, protect his family in Egypt, and bring them safely home again.
We never hear him preach a sermon, but his life becomes one.
Faithfulness doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it just shows up to work, keeps its word, and loves the people God has given.
Meaning for Today
The Christmas story reminds us that the gospel advances not only through prophets and poets but also through carpenters and caregivers.
Most of the holy work in the world still happens quietly—through people who build, mend, protect, and believe.
Maybe this Christmas, the invitation isn’t to do something grand, but to be faithful in something small. To trust that obedience, even unseen, still moves the story of God forward.
