10 Scripture Readings for a Wedding
Introduction
Many years ago, when I officiated my brother’s wedding, I spoke on Jesus’ first miracle, turning water into wine at a wedding feast. I chose that passage because I believe that Christ cares about the happiness of a family and the happiness and joy of a couple speaking their vows of marriage.
Below is a list of Scripture passages to help as you take your part in the events of the wedding. May God bless you and the lucky couple. —Pastor Jason
1. Genesis 2:18–24 — The Gift of Companionship
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them…
Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.
2. Ruth 1:16–17 — A Promise of Faithful Love
But Ruth said, “Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God…”
3. Psalm 121 — God’s Faithful Watchfulness
I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth…
4. Psalm 128 — Blessing Upon the Household
Happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways… May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

6. Song of Solomon 8:6–7 — Love’s Enduring Strength
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death…
7. Romans 12:9–18 — A Life Shaped by Love
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good… If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
8. 1 Corinthians 13:4–13 — The Greatest of These Is Love
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude… And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
9. Ephesians 5:21–33 — Christ-Shaped Love and Mutual Care
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ… Husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies…
10. John 2:1–11 — The Wedding at Cana
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee… Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim…
