Unity Candle Ceremony Script

Script for the Unity Candle Ceremony

Today we come to a moment within the ceremony that symbolizes what God is doing in this marriage. Two families, two stories, two lives shaped by grace now become one shared life. The unity candle represents this mystery. It does not erase the individual light each person carries; rather, it shows how those lights join together to form a flame that is stronger, steadier, and more radiant than either on its own.

[Name] and [Name], please take your individual candles. These candles remind us of the homes that raised you, the friendships that shaped you, and the gifts God placed within you long before this day arrived. They also remind us that your lives are precious in the sight of God, each of you made in God’s image and called by name.

As you light the center candle, you are not extinguishing your own lives or identities. Instead, you are offering them freely to one another. In lighting the unity candle, you are declaring that from this day forward, your hopes, your strength, your joy, and your faith will be shared. You will walk together, pray together, and build a home where love is practiced in the daily, ordinary ways that make a marriage strong.

Please light the center candle.

May this new flame be a sign of God’s presence in your life together. May it remind you that the love you share does not come only from within yourselves but is upheld by God, who remains faithful in every season. Let this candle be a witness to the promise you make today and the grace that will carry you in the years ahead.

Let us pray.

Gracious God, bless this couple as they join their lives in covenant love. Strengthen them when the road is difficult, renew them when they grow weary, and fill their home with compassion, forgiveness, and joy. May the light of Christ shine upon them and through them, now and always. Amen.

Alternatively, you can have a specific prayer for the bride or groom.
